Dharavi Slum

Dharavi, heart of Bombai.
Some interesting/terrifying info:
Population In Bombay: 24mln
55% of them lives in slums
Slums are 8% of city area…

Look so bad. But many articles says that most of those people are happy to live in there. Sound totally ridiculous but Indian people are really lovely and like to work and help each other.
Looking at the pictures viewer can't say that at all... It's rather sad and kind of disgusting.

  1. Hi Sandy!
Hope you're getting on well with your new projects. If you're interested in the life of people living in slums, have a look at the work by the Norwegian Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen. He's photographed life in slums in India, Venezuela, Kenya and Indonesia for his project The Places We Live.
You mentioned the work of Pieter Hugo and electronic waste, which made me think of the work of Edward Burtynsky, because this is what he deals with in his work. There's an interesting documentary about him, it should be in the library!
You also wrote about the changing image of Alice in Wonderland. There was an exhibition about the book and the art it has inspired at Tate Liverpool earlier this year. The exhibition is over now, but if you get your hands on the catalogue, that could prove helpful.
Also, hope you've been to the National Gallery and seen Velazequez Venus you wrote about!
